It can be hard to know what to say, what to do, what to bring to the bedside of someone who is seriously ill. Here are some of the items that we’ve noticed our patients seem to appreciate and use.
-
A nice night light for the bedside.
-
A journal and pen, or a guest book for visitors to leave loving messages.
-
Hand lotion or cream, should be unscented or lightly scented.
-
Lip balm.
-
Cozy socks or slippers.
-
A warm scarf or hat (even a hospital gown can be accessorized!).
-
Soft blankets, either handmade or store bought.
-
A photograph in a frame, a photo collage to hang on the wall or several photographs arranged in a small album.
-
Know anyone who is a gifted musician? Live music at the bedside can be lovely.
-
A small basket of favorite snacks or teas (ask what the patient is able to tolerate, or can be for caregivers).
-
Flameless candles (some of the battery-operated versions come with a remote control).
-
A stuffed favorite animal.
-
Coloring books and colored pens.
-
A beautiful puzzle (for patient and/or caregivers who spend time at the bedside).
-
Handwritten notes of love, shared memories and/or gratitude for your friendship.
-
A mason jar full of mint sprigs (nice for nausea).
-
A gift card to a grocery store that delivers.
-
Soup that can be heated for now or frozen for later.
-
Lawn service or pet care
-
Do you cut hair, or know someone who does home visits for hair or nail care?
-
Respite for the caregiver, or the gift of time at the bedside.
-
A pretty (or handsome) bag for toiletries.
-
A nonelectric heating pad.
-
Hydroflask or any other double-insulated water bottle (will keep drinks cold at the bedside for a long time).
-
A travel neck pillow (semi circular) with washable cover, good for home or trips to hospital.
