There is so much happening these days that is out of our control. You may have been told that you cannot come to work. Or that you can come to work, but will be screened at the door. You may have been told by your employer that you cannot leave the city limit. Your children may not be able to attend school.
In these uncertain times, we are reminded that the only thing we really do control is how we respond to the external world. We can choose practices which focus and settle the mind, as a way to cope with fear and stress.
Lately, as we double and redouble our handwashing efforts, it occurs to us that the simple act of washing one’s hands is an opportunity to practice loving kindness toward ourselves and others. In that spirit, we humbly offer the following simple meditations.
-
Bring your attention to the breath while washing your hands. On the inhalation, say to yourself “I am breathing in.” On the exhalation, say to yourself “I am breathing out.”
-
Bring your attention to the experience of washing your hands, reciting the following to yourself. On the inhalation: “I am caring for myself.” On the exhalation: “I am caring for others.” Repeat as needed, as a reminder that giving care and receiving care are equally important.
-
Notice the tactile experience of washing your hands. Feel the water, then the soap. Massage each finger, the palm, the wrists, the arms. Thank your hands for their service to the world.
-
Write the following sentences on an index card or post-it note, and tape them over sink: “May I be safe. May I be happy and healthy. May I have ease of body and mind. May I be at peace.”
