Week 8, 140 massages completed since our return to work. We maintain our commitment to a variety of practices to reduce risk: masks and aprons which are changed between patients, limitations on travel, no “moonlighting” at other facilities, and social distancing from visitors and colleagues. All personnel continue to be screened at the beginning and end of every shift. In this regard, our guidelines have not changed.
It has proven difficult to stay true to the practice of social distancing from actively-dying patients. This is largely due to the fact that we don’t typically work on the feet once mottling has started (too grounding, in our minds, for someone who might be attempting to leave the body).
For our imminent patients, we have introduced the following:
- When the patient seems comfortable and family are present, we offer aromatherapy on a cotton ball. With a few drops of essential oil and a carrier, the cotton ball can be placed inside a pillow case or pajama pocket. Our families seem to love it, and our nursing leadership is assisting to formalize this protocol at the unit.
- For patients who have no family, we are providing short periods of caring presence at the bedside. These brief sessions might involve gentle caress or a cool wet washcloth to the head and forehead, a resting hand over the patient’s heart, or simply holding the patient’s hand.
As the practice of massage therapy opens in varying degrees across the country, we send love and concern to each of you. May you, your clients and your loved ones be safe. May you be well. May you find comfort and ease in the discomfort of these challenging times. We’d love to hear how you’re doing and what you’re learning.
