Every person on the planet will die someday. We don’t like to think about it, but it’s a fact of life. You likely have already been impacted by this reality. Perhaps you have lost family members, friends or clients. Have you felt confident to use your massage skills to help them? Would you like to be better prepared the next time this opportunity arises?
Final Touch Training helps prepare massage therapists and other providers to skilled touch for people during the last year of life. Benefits include decreased agitation, greater calm, decreased pain, lubrication of dry skin, prevention of bedsores and reduced feelings of isolation. Responses from clients vary from subtle (such as a change in breathing pattern) to quite dramatic. Here are some direct quotes from dying clients we have worked with:
“I’ve never had a massage before and I didn’t know it could be like this.”
“This is extraordinary. When can you come back?”
“I can’t believe how good I feel right now!”
“Where have you been all my life?”
Final Touch Training prepares therapists to address common symptoms at the end of life, including pain, anxiety, shortness of breath, digestive issues and edema. In a supportive learning environment, students will participate in designing care plans and will work with partners to give and receive hands-on work. But don’t expect this training to be dark or solemn! At Final Touch, we believe in care for the whole person, including the more playful side. We also believe that the intensity of this work demands a commitment to self-care. So we include guided meditations and invite you to bring a yoga mat to class (we will have extra mats on hand if you need to borrow).
Among the testimonials on our website is the following from one of our students: “I really expected it to feel too long, but I was wrong. The content was very relevant and interesting, approached with reverence and taught me many things I didn’t know. I’ll be a better MT with this knowledge.”
